FTP & Directory Settings

You should use "www.sitename.com" as the FTP destination for your client program. Your home page should typically be named 'index.htm' or 'index.html' (the .asp and .php extensions will also work if you are using the appropriate components).Do not use ftp.adams.net or www.adams.net.

If asked for a destination folder, use 'web'

Path names for web sites follow the following convention: /home/sites/loginname/web

Documents located here are available for public viewing:

  • Server logs: /home/sites/loginname/logs
  • Paths for common services:
    perl: /usr/bin/perl
    sendmail: /usr/sbin/sendmail
  • cgi-bin A cgi-bin created in your web folder should be created and permisisons set as chmod 755, as well as your scripts. Do not use chmod 775 or 777 for your scripts even if the instructions tell you so, as this will give others potential access to your files
Software & Features

  • MySQL

Contact our sales department to have a MySQL login and database enabled for your site.

  • Password Protection
Go to this page for instructions on using .htaccess for protecting portions of your site.

  • PHP4
For security purposes, to utilize PHP4 on your site, you will need to place an .htaccess directive in the root of your site:php_flag register_globals on
  • SSI (Server-side Includes)

Make sure that your files end in the ".shtml" extension. It is very resource intensive to parse all files, so .html files are not processed for these. You can, however, add an .htaccess file in your /web folder with statement to allow this:

  • AddHandler server-parsed .html SSL/Site Certificates

This allows users to connect your site with 128-bit encryption. You will need to contract with a "Certificate Authority" to obtain a site certificate; this will require some paperwork to be submitted to validate ownership of your domain name.

Once you have selected your Certificate Vendor, contact our sales department to have a CSR generated so that you can obtain the digitally signed certificate for your site.

  • FormMail

Adams recommends that users use the nms Formmail program that is available at this sourceforge.net. You should use the 'compat' package.

If you choose to use the FormMail script, you must use version 1.92 or higher. Note the path for sendmail and the cgi-bin permission requirements (in the above sections).  Please note that

Adams reserves the right to disable or remove without prior notice any script or process (perl, php, asp, etc.) that poses a security or performance issue with our servers. Please do not remove any version or copyright information for third-party scripts that would limit the ability of Adams technical staff to determine the source and/or version of the script. Web developers are expected to be diligent in staying apprised of security vulnerabilities that are issued for any scripts that they may use and for remedying any deficiencies in a timely manner.

  • Statistics / Log Rotation

Access log files are rotated weekly and retained for two weeks. The rotated files are compressed to save space. Log files are located in the 'logs' folder underneath the web site (root of the site). Current log data would then be /logs/access_log -- the most recent rotated file would be /logs/access_log.1.gz, etc.
